PRICHARD, Ala. (WALA) -- A family pet is dead following a vicious attack by two pit bulls. It happened Wednesday afternoon in the Whistler community on McAboy Street.

Devastated by the loss, Gloria Williams knows she's lucky she wasn't attacked herself.

Williams came home Wednesday afternoon and discovered two dogs inside her home.

"When I came back -- I heard this noise in the utility room... it was a chain rattling," recalled Williams. "So I opened the door - I knew my dogs didn't have chains on them and when I opened the door there was this pit like he wanted to pounce on me... and another one behind the door -- but then I saw my little dog laying down on the floor -- he wasn't moving."

The pit bulls got inside after tearing through the screen door of her utility room. While her dog Honey survived the attack, her smaller dachshund Starsky did not.

"My dog is dead... and the other one has been bit," said Williams. "My dogs are like my children. If the chain had not been rattling up against stuff ... I never would have even known they were in there. They could have attacked me."

The dogs left the same way they came in -- running down the street. At that time a neighbor was driving up and saw the two pit bulls and was hesitant to get out of her car -- until she saw them run off.

Animal Control came out and filed a report. Still with two pit bulls running loose -- Williams is sending out a warning to her neighbors, especially with children and small pets to beware.

"I'd like to see them caught and I would like for them to be taken care of. I mean pits running around it could have been somebody's children... And if they was bold enough to come in my house and tear my screen... I've never heard of such. But I think something should be done about it," said Williams.

If you see the pit bulls -- described as "sandy in color" -- call Prichard Animal Control at 251-452-7843.
